Gloucester Cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, consisting of a uniquely beautiful fusion of Norman Romanesque and Perpendicular Gothic from the mid 14th century onwards. The most obviously Norman part is the nave, immediately apparent on entering the building with its round arches and thick columns. Located in the presbytery in the east end of the cathedral is the magnificent high altar. Set behind this is the great East Window and its vastness creates a true sense of scale in this space.
